Albers Squares

Students explore geometric abstract art through Albers and Kandinsky, then create a layered Homage to the Square–inspired composition while documenting their steps like an algorithm.

Students discover how geometric abstract artists use simple shapes, color, and careful planning to create expressive artwork. After exploring the work of Josef Albers and Wassily Kandinsky, students investigate how changing the order, placement, and layering of shapes and colors affects the final composition. Using construction paper, tissue paper, and other materials, students create their own Homage to the Square–inspired artwork while documenting the sequence of steps they used to assemble it. Through this process, students begin to recognize that artists, like programmers, follow and revise algorithms to create different outcomes.

Steps in the lesson

  1. Warm up

    5–7 minutes · Slides 3–5

    • Invite students to observe the photograph and think about the emotions it evokes.
    • Ask students to write one or two feeling words and create a quick sketch using one to three colors that best represent those emotions.
    • Have students share how color choices can communicate feelings even without drawing realistic objects.
    • Explain that today's lesson explores how artists use simple shapes and color to communicate ideas and emotions.
  2. Whole class instruction

    10–15 minutes · Slides 6–10

    • Introduce geometric abstract art as artwork that uses simple shapes, colors, and arrangements rather than realistic images.
    • Share examples from Wassily Kandinsky, discussing how he believed colors and shapes could communicate emotion without depicting recognizable objects.
    • Introduce Josef Albers and his Homage to the Square series, emphasizing his investigation of color relationships and visual perception.
    • Facilitate discussion about how changing the placement, size, and layering of shapes changes the appearance of an artwork.
    • Introduce the concept that artists often follow a sequence of decisions — similar to an algorithm — to build a composition.
    • Demonstrate the difference between opaque and translucent materials and discuss how layering changes the visual effect.
  3. Activity: Homage to the Square

    25–30 minutes · Slides 11–12

    • Introduce the challenge to create an original artwork inspired by Josef Albers. Students create a composition by layering at least four paper squares using at least three different sizes. Encourage students to experiment with: changing the order of layers, changing colors, mixing opaque and translucent materials, and adjusting the placement of squares.
    • Students complete the reflection describing the mood or "vibe" of their artwork and identify the materials used in each layer.
    • Circulate throughout the classroom asking students how changing one step affects the final composition and encouraging experimentation before making final decisions.
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 13

    • Review the day's big ideas: color can communicate emotion; geometric abstract artists use simple shapes to create meaning; the order of layering and arranging shapes changes the final artwork; artists often follow a sequence of steps, much like an algorithm.
    • Invite students to share whether they preferred working with opaque or translucent materials and explain why. Preview tomorrow's lesson by explaining that students will recreate similar artwork using digital drag-and-drop code blocks, connecting today's artistic process to programming.

Materials & preparation

Gather

  • Scissors

Learner variability

Students may plan their arrangement before gluing by experimenting with different combinations and sequences of layers. Provide a visual or step-by-step model showing how to select, arrange, layer, and attach the squares for students who benefit from additional structure.

Students can work independently or with a partner to discuss color choices, test arrangements, and sequence their steps. Allow students to communicate the mood or "vibe" of their artwork through written words, discussion, or pointing/selecting from descriptive words, rather than relying on writing alone.

Encourage students who are ready for additional challenges to experiment with less predictable placement, contrasting materials, or changing the order of layers and compare how those changes affect the final composition.

Background for the teacher

Color relationships
How colors influence one another when they are placed side by side or layered together. Artists use color relationships to create contrast, harmony, emphasis, or even the illusion that colors are changing.
Homage
An artwork created to honor, celebrate, or draw inspiration from another artist or artwork while adding the creator's own ideas or interpretation. In this lesson, students create a Homage to the Square–inspired artwork based on Josef Albers' exploration of color and shape.
Geometric abstract art
A style of art that uses simple geometric shapes, colors, and patterns instead of realistic images. Rather than depicting recognizable objects, artists arrange shapes to explore ideas, emotions, movement, or visual relationships.
Layering
The process of placing one shape, color, or material on top of another to build a composition. The order in which layers are arranged can change the appearance, balance, and meaning of an artwork.
Opaque
Materials that do not allow light to pass through them — objects behind an opaque material cannot be seen. Construction paper and cardstock are examples; heavy layers of oil paint can also produce an opaque effect.
Translucent
Materials that allow some light to pass through, making objects behind them partially visible. Tissue paper and tracing paper are common translucent materials that create new visual effects when layered.
