Art with Shapes

Over two days, partners transform a famous portrait or landscape into a geometric artwork, document their algorithm, write an artist statement, and curate a class gallery.

Students explore how artists and programmers use abstraction to focus on the most important details. After examining examples from artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Adam Lister, students work with a partner to transform a famous portrait into a geometric artwork using simple shapes. They then document the algorithm they followed, write an artist statement describing their computational thinking, and curate their work as part of a class gallery.

Note: this lesson is designed to stretch over approximately two 45-minute class periods.

Steps in the lesson

Day 1

  1. Warm up

    5 minutes · Slides 2–4

    • Students consider what basic shapes would be needed to create a geometric representation of a cat, and share their thinking with a near neighbor.
  2. Whole class instruction

    10 minutes · Slides 5–9

    • Review the process of abstraction through geometric shapes in both artwork from Roy Lichtenstein and the coding tasks over the last two days.
    • To support student success: model the process of geometric abstraction using the tutorial slide deck or video. Additional tips and hints are available for groups of students needing additional support.
  3. Activity 1: geometric abstraction

    25 minutes · Slides 10–15

    • Introduce the collaborative challenge that will take the next two days. Students work with a partner to co-create geometric artwork using construction paper, scissors, and glue to simplify an existing artwork, selecting one of the provided examples from the Art with Shapes Inspiration Gallery.
    • The gallery collection (embedded in slides 15–16) is grouped into two formats — portrait and landscape — and represents a range of styles and subjects. Note: the artists on the landscape orientation page represent a range of artists that lived and/or worked in North Carolina over the last 125 years.
    • Upon artwork selection, students begin creating their geometric abstraction artwork. Remind students that their handout includes more detailed directions and examples on the back.
    • Note that the handout is completed in pairs — it becomes the basis of the artist statement they will share on Day 2.
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 17–18

    • Students play a quick game of "would you rather" to share what type of abstraction task they prefer.

  1. Warm up

    • A quick choice to either think about where they left off yesterday in their artwork, or practice sketching key geometric shapes in a bird, flower, or dancer.
  2. Whole class instruction

    10 minutes · Slides 21–25

    • Summarize where most of the class left off yesterday.
    • Review an artist statement for a piece of artwork relevant to your students, and/or share the example from an interview with Adam Lister.
    • Share the definition of an artist statement and its elements: what they did, how they did it, and why they did it. Students use sentence starters to help them incorporate a computational thinking skill into their statement.
  3. Activity 2: artist statement & curation

    25 minutes · Slides 26–28

    • In pairs, students continue working on their abstraction artwork and filling out the handout, which serves as a draft of their artist statement.
    • Artist Convening — depending on time, choose one method for students to share their work. Pair-share: pairs meet up to share their artwork and two facts from their artist statement (works well when students finish at different times).
    • Art Curation: brings 3–4 pairs together to organize and sequence their artwork based on a shared feature (works well for groups that have finished and are ready to move on, or students accustomed to larger collaborative groups).
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 31–33

    • Review the big ideas of the lessons this week.
    • Administer the Expedition 2 Pit Stop.

Learner variability

This lesson provides multiple entry points for students to engage in geometric abstraction. Students choose from a range of inspirational artworks, receive optional visual scaffolds such as tracing and shape-identification supports, and work collaboratively to create and explain their artwork.

Structured handouts, sentence starters, and multiple opportunities to represent their thinking through art, writing, and discussion ensure that students can access the learning goals through multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression while developing an understanding of abstraction, algorithms, and artistic communication.

Students can also work independently.

Background for the teacher

Artist statement
A brief written reflection that explains the artist's ideas, creative choices, process, and what they want viewers to understand about their work.
Geometric portrait
A portrait created primarily from basic geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles) rather than realistic lines and details.
Landscape
Either a type of artwork that shows outdoor scenery, or the horizontal orientation of a page, screen, or canvas where the width is greater than the height. Students may encounter both meanings in this lesson.
Portrait
Either a type of artwork that represents a person, or the vertical orientation of a page, screen, or canvas where the height is greater than the width. Students create a portrait using geometric shapes and may work in portrait orientation.
Representation
A simplified model or version of an object, idea, or data that highlights the features that matter most for a particular purpose.

  • Artists and computer scientists both use abstraction to simplify complex images into essential shapes, colors, and patterns. Whether creating a portrait or a landscape, students practice identifying the features that matter most and representing them in a way that is clear, recognizable, and can be recreated using a systematic process.
