Abstraction with Digital Pixels

Students bring their paper-pixel designs into Fractal Studio, creating the same image at two resolutions to see how pixel count changes abstraction and detail.

Students build on their paper-pixel artwork by exploring how digital artists use pixels, grids, and resolution to create recognizable images. They compare early character sketches with pixel-based video game graphics and examine how changing the number of pixels affects detail and abstraction. Students then use the Pixel Art tool in Fractal Studio to create two versions of the same image: a lower-resolution version that is more abstract and a higher-resolution version that includes more detail. They conclude by discussing their design decisions with a partner and reflecting on how digital tools change the artmaking process.

Steps in the lesson

  1. Warm up

    5–7 minutes · Slides 3–4

    • Introduce the lesson as a one-day exploration of digital pixel art.
    • Display the three pixel-art character examples and identify which example has the strongest "pixel vibe." Invite students to discuss which image they selected and identify the visual features that influenced their choice.
    • Listen for observations such as visible squares, stair-step edges, chunks of color, and simplified detail.
  2. Whole class instruction

    10–12 minutes · Slides 5–17

    • Explore different ways students encounter pixel art in everyday life, including video games, digital art, and animation.
    • Examine how images become more abstract when the number of pixels is reduced. Help develop language to describe pixel art by comparing hand-drawn and pixel digital versions of images.
    • Introduce resolution as the number of pixels used to represent an image: fewer pixels create a lower-resolution and generally more abstract image. Emphasize that higher resolution does NOT automatically make an artwork better — it simply gives the artist more visual information to work with.
    • Demonstrate how to log into Fractal Design Studio and the key features of the Pixel Art tool — select and change colors, place pixels on the canvas, save an artwork, select the paint-by-number pathway, change the grid size or resolution, and start a new artwork. Students will need their assigned login to enter the system.
  3. Activity: digital pixel art

    25 minutes · Slides 19

    • Introduce the goals of the digital pixel art activity in Fractal Studio. There are two learner options: recreate or redesign the analog artwork digitally.
    • Challenge students to create two versions of the same artwork: (a) a lower-resolution, more abstract version using fewer pixels, and (b) a higher-resolution, less abstract version using more pixels.
    • Encourage early finishers to experiment with color palettes and pixel size, create an original pixel artwork, or complete the Artist Interview comparing artworks — abstraction (which details did you keep or remove?), pattern recognition (which shapes or colors repeat?), representation (how does your image still communicate the original idea?), and opinion (did you prefer the analog or digital task?).
    • Circulate and ask how changing resolution affects each artwork — "What is the most important feature of your image?", "What did you remove in the lower-resolution version?", "Could you create the image with even fewer pixels?"
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 20–22

    • Review the key ideas: a pixel is a square of a single color; pixel art is digital art created by arranging pixels into images; images on computer screens are composed of pixels; fewer pixels generally require greater abstraction.
    • If time allows, invite students to provide formative feedback by completing Pit Stop 1.

Teacher-facing slide. Use before class to open the lesson plan, student materials, Fractal Studio, and any links needed for today. This slide can be skipped when presenting to students. Decision Points: Will you demonstrate how to use the Fractal Pixel tool or will you use the slides? How will students access the URL (e.g., email it to them, Post it in Google classroom…) Will you have students retrieve computers for the second half of the lesson at the beginning or during class?   • Print a paper list of logins per period to look up students who forgot theirs.

Learner variability

Students can select a pathway that matches their interests, confidence, and readiness. They may recreate their paper artwork, choose a new inspiration image, design an original image, or use the paint-by-number option.

Students can vary the complexity of their image and work with different grid sizes. Digital supports such as visible grids, color choices, paint-by-number prompts, and adjustable resolution provide additional scaffolds.

Students may work independently or collaborate with a partner while still creating and saving their own work.

Background for the teacher

Digital canvas
The workspace where digital artwork is created. Similar to a sheet of paper for traditional art, the digital canvas is made up of pixels that can be individually edited.
Digital drawing tools
Tools that let artists add, erase, or modify pixels on a digital canvas — pencil, eraser, paint bucket, eyedropper, and color picker. Each helps artists create and refine designs efficiently.
Pixelation
When the individual pixels of an image become visible, usually because the image is enlarged beyond its original resolution. Pixelation demonstrates how image quality depends on the number of pixels available.
Fractal Studio
The digital creation platform used throughout the FRACTAL curriculum, with three creative tools — Pixel Art, Algorithmic Art, and AI Art. In the Pixel Art tool, students build images by coloring individual pixels while practicing abstraction, pattern recognition, algorithmic thinking, and debugging.
