You and I + AI

Students compare how humans and AI create images from text — drawing from prompts, guessing each other's prompts, and discovering that AI recognizes patterns rather than imagining.

Students are introduced to artificial intelligence (AI) by comparing how humans and AI create images from text. Through drawing, discussion, and simple image-generation examples, students explore how people imagine new ideas while AI recognizes patterns learned from large collections of images and text. Students discover that AI generates images by identifying relationships between words and visual patterns rather than thinking or imagining like a human.

Steps in the lesson

  1. Warm up

    5–7 minutes · Slides 2–4

    • Ask students how they would draw something they have never seen in real life — "a shark with legs chasing a cat." Invite students to compare drawings with a partner and discuss similarities and differences.
    • Facilitate a brief discussion about why everyone's drawings are different even though they started with the same prompt. Explain that people combine imagination, prior experiences, and visual memories to create new ideas, setting up today's exploration of AI.
  2. Activity: Draw the Prompt

    10–15 minutes · Slides 5

    • Describe how to pair up and play the game. Give each student a prompt card and ask them to secretly choose one prompt. Students draw an image representing the prompt without showing the written description, then exchange drawings with a partner.
    • Partners write the prompt they believe best matches the drawing.
  3. Whole class instruction

    25 minutes · Slides 6–15

    • Facilitate a discussion about which prompts were easy or difficult to identify and why.
    • Show examples of Google Image Search and AI-generated images created from similar prompts.
    • Discuss how adding or changing descriptive words changes the resulting image, and how AI relies on patterns rather than imagination.
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 16–17

    • Review the lesson's big ideas: AI generates images by recognizing patterns rather than imagining; AI is trained by connecting words with visual examples; small changes in a prompt can change the image that is generated.
    • AI is a computer program — and it can make mistakes.
