FRACTAL

Innovation and Imagination · Lesson 2

Picture it with Words

Students generate images in Fractal Studio's AI Art tool, refine their prompts, look for signs of bias, and reflect on how to adapt AI output to express their own ideas.

Students continue to explore how AI tools generate images by reproducing patterns from images and text created by humans. Students generate images in FRACTAL’s Digital Studio, explain how they improved their prompt, and note any signs of bias in the AI’s output. Students see examples from different AI image generators and analyze the differences in a discussion about AI training. They then reflect on how they can adapt or change one of their AI-generated images to better express their own ideas and create artwork inspired by the image.

The step-by-step lesson guide, standards alignment, and slide-by-slide guide for this lesson are still in development — coming soon.

Learning targets

  • Understand that AI generates images from data and is not an actual artist.
  • Describe how they can use AI thoughtfully and creatively.
  • Recognize examples of bias in AI responses.

Background for the teacher

Prompt
Text that is created to get a specific answer from an AI program.
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Computer programming that performs tasks such as recognizing patterns and creating text or visual content based on prompts.
AI training
When an AI tool is programmed to analyze text or images and find patterns, then uses those patterns to create something new.
Image generation
A computer process that creates image content.
Bias
When the results produced by an AI tool are incorrect or incomplete due to the tool's training data.

How these ideas connect

  • The FRACTAL AI Art tool we use in class takes in text prompts from the user to create images.
  • The AI tool creates new images by analyzing large quantities of text and images and making connections between them.
  • The text and images that are analyzed by the AI tools affect the images that it can generate. If what the tool trains on is limited, it can produce content with bias.
