AI Art Critique

Students apply the four-step art critique — Describe, Analyze, Interpret, Evaluate — to human-made and AI-generated images, and wrestle with questions of authorship, intent, and originality.

Students learn and apply the four-step art critique process — Describe, Analyze, Interpret, and Evaluate — to human-made artwork and AI-generated images. They begin by considering whether an AI program can be considered an artist, then use Girl with a Pearl Earring to explore how art critics observe visual features, analyze composition, interpret possible meaning, and form evidence-based opinions. Students work with a partner to critique and compare human-made and AI-generated images. As they compare the two, they learn that AI generates images by recognizing and recombining patterns associated with images and text rather than imagining or making intentional artistic decisions the way a human does — and consider how this changes questions about artistic intent, authorship, originality, prompt writing, and evaluation.

Steps in the lesson

  1. Warm up

    5 minutes · Slides 2–4

    • Invite students to consider: Can an AI program be considered an artist? Give students time to independently record their thinking before discussing why AI could or could not be considered an artist with a partner. Briefly gather perspectives from the class.
    • Introduce the lesson goals and explain that students will use the art critique process to compare human-made art and AI-generated images.
  2. Whole class instruction

    15 minutes · Slides 5–11

    • Introduce art critique as a structured way of observing, discussing, and evaluating artwork rather than criticizing it.
    • Introduce the four stages of the critique process: Describe — what do you observe? Analyze — how did the artist organize the artwork? Interpret — what might the artwork mean? Evaluate — what is your opinion and why?
    • Use Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring to model the process. Draw attention to observable features first, then elements such as line, shape, color, space, pattern, repetition, movement, and contrast before considering possible meaning and evaluation.
    • Reinforce the difference between observation and interpretation and encourage students to support ideas about artwork with visual evidence.
  3. Activity: critique an AI image

    20 minutes · Slides 13

    • Explain that AI image-generation programs do not imagine or make meaning in the same way humans do. Students practice applying the critique process to an AI-generated image using the AI Art Critique Partner Work handout, starting from the worked example for Vermeer's painting. Because this piece wasn't made by a person, there are additional features to look for.
    • Describe: look for visual features, glitches, or unusual elements and identify the tool involved.
    • Analyze: consider patterns, blended visual styles, and the relationship between the prompt and generated image.
    • Interpret: recognize that an AI system does not necessarily hold the intention or message a human artist might; meaning may come from the prompt writer and/or the viewer.
    • Evaluate: beyond the image itself, consider authorship, originality, prompt writing, creativity, and other questions associated with AI-generated work.
  4. Closing

    5 minutes · Slides 14

    • Invite students to share one way their critique of an AI-generated image was similar to critiquing human-made art and one way it was different.
    • Return briefly to the opening question: Can an AI program be considered an artist? Ask students whether anything they learned about AI image generation or art critique changed, strengthened, or complicated their original response.

Learner variability

Students engage with the ideas through multiple pathways: individual reflection, visual examples, teacher modeling, partner discussion, and written critique. The four-step Describe–Analyze–Interpret–Evaluate framework breaks a complex critique task into manageable stages and gives students repeated language for organizing their thinking.

Visual examples of both human-made and AI-generated images provide concrete reference points, while prompts about color, shape, pattern, composition, feeling, and meaning offer entry points for students with different levels of art experience. Students can first rehearse ideas with a partner before sharing with the class and may demonstrate understanding through written responses, discussion, or reference to specific visual evidence.

Background for the teacher

Art critique
A structured process for observing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating artwork. It moves discussion beyond whether someone simply likes or dislikes a work and helps viewers use evidence to explain their thinking.
Describe
Focuses on what can be directly observed without initially making judgments — subject matter, tools or materials, technique, color, shapes, or other visible features.
Analyze
Examines how the artwork is organized — elements such as line, shape, color, and space, along with patterns, symmetry, repetition, movement, and contrast.
Interpret
Asks what the artwork might mean or communicate. Interpretation can include emotion, message, symbolism, or social ideas and may differ among viewers.
Evaluate
Asks viewers to develop and support an opinion about the work using evidence from the earlier stages of critique.
AI image generation
A simplified model — AI systems identify patterns associated with text and images during training and use those learned relationships when generating images from prompts. The AI does not bring human experience, intention, or personal meaning to the image the way a human artist does.
Artistic intent
Ideas, purposes, or meanings an artist deliberately seeks to communicate. With an AI-generated image, students distinguish among the intentions of the person writing the prompt, the characteristics of the generated image, and meanings that viewers themselves construct.
Authorship
Who created a work of art and who should receive creative credit. AI-generated images complicate authorship because the final image is produced by a computer program using patterns learned during training, while humans contribute prompts, ideas, and creative direction.
